When it comes to secret, enchanting hideaways Allenvale has impeccable credentials. With Lorne and the Great Ocean Road on its doorstep, you could not ask for a better location combination - Australia's most renowned coastal destination and a stunning forest valley.

These utterly charming timber cottages have a mellowness that only adds to the sense of connection with the past and appreciation of life's simple pleasures. What better way to relax than swap the city's babble for the babbling of a stream.

Property Description:
Once you delve into the enchanting forest backdrop to Lorne, another world of waterfalls, streams and beautiful bushwalking trails is discovered. In under 5 minutes you can travel from the sandy beach of Louttit Bay into the cool, shady tranquillity of a leafy, riverbank setting.

In a valley surrounded by forest, the historic farm property of Allenvale was established on the banks of the St George River in 1878. For many years its fields and orchards supplied the local population with fresh produce. The early settlers also planted some familiar European trees, which are now of an impressive age and size, though the indigenous backdrop still dominates and ensures the presence of abundant native wildlife, including kangaroos, koalas, possums as well as many bird species.

An organic apple orchard continues the farming tradition at Allenvale, while four self-contained guest cottages offer holiday makers and Great Ocean Road tourists a chance to hide away amidst the quiet charms of this secluded valley setting and still be within 'cooee' of the seaside.

Each cottage is unique in its detail although they all have similar rustic appeal starting with their grey weathered natural timber exteriors. There are two genuine timber-mill houses that have been restored, preserving their original character while adding modern amenities unknown to the early occupants who worked for the mill that was built over the river. Kerosene is perhaps the most rustic with its eat-in kitchen and separate cosy lounge with a traditional fireplace, inside which is a now a wood burner. Surprises include a pew in the main bedroom. The more spacious Rose has a roomy open plan kitchen and lounge with walls finished in rough-sawn, natural timber. Both cottages have two bedrooms, but Rose has a sun room area with an extra single bed and is carpeted throughout while Kerosene has painted timber floors. These two buildings are sited right along the edge of the river with Henderson Creek at their rear.

The other two houses have been built in a similar traditional style. Recycled materials such as timber, doors, windows, cupboards etc. have been used extensively and the result is rich with country character. Gables has large living room with a dining area behind the sitting area. The separate kitchen also has a table and chairs for meals. Its two bedrooms cater comfortably for two couples or a family of four. Riverbank is the only two-storey dwelling, with three bedrooms upstairs and a spacious open plan kitchen and living room downstairs.

Simple furnishings, subtle colours, kitchen dressers, hand-painted trunks and fashionably distressed furniture all carefully fit the part; a look that would be very much at home in the pages of Australian Country Style.

Special Features:
Beautiful walking trails lead from Allenvale inland alongside the river, downstream to the ocean and up to Teddy's Lookout, which boasts the most breathtaking Great Ocean Road lookout this side of the Twelve Apostles.
Qdos Art Gallery and Café is also within walking distance.
