Property Description: Hosts, Lee and Andrew, have nurtured and developed their 35 acre 'hobby farm' with great passion. It was once part of an 800-acre dairy farm. Now the paddocks are grazed by horses and cattle, the steeper areas have been re-vegetated with indigenous plants, and the precious culinary spice saffron is being grown and harvested. After renovating the c1902 homestead and creating an ever expanding English/cottage style garden around their house, the owners more recently turned their attention to designing and building a unique guest cottage.
Anderley Cottage is positioned well out of sight from the homestead some 100 metres away. Andrew, a registered builder, has designed the cottage to capture the north sun and the magnificent views which can be seen from each room including the bathroom. The design reflects an architectural interest in the wonderful character of Australian bush huts and their associated corrugated iron water tanks mounted on timber stands. Some of these elements have been astutely combined with contemporary functionality.
At the heart of the cottage is a large stone chimney, with glass doors either side opening onto the deep, full length balcony. The two bedrooms, with their unusual curved exterior walls, are located either end of the cottage. There are no solid internal walls separating the bedrooms from the living area, however, perfectly fitted timber venetian blinds can be lowered to screen the bedrooms from view, or raised to open the interior space completely. The decor and furnishings achieve complementary balance of modern design and rustic country style.
The cottage nestles into the hillside, between native trees and shrubs planted in recent years. Nearby, a great stand of Cyprus trees, over 80 years old, provides beautiful shade in the heat of summer. The cottage balcony offers a prime vantage point to observe birds in the nearby trees. As well as kookaburras and magpies, eagles can often be seen soaring past.
