Property Description: Nestled in its own leafy garden at the front of this large suburban block, stands an impressive two-storey Edwardian home of grand proportions. This is one of the stately homes that can be discovered in the neighbourhood of Hopetoun Gardens, although apartments have seen the demise of some of these architectural beauties from a former era. Binnowee has not only survived, it has been immaculately restored, used as a family residence for many years, and now strategically remodelled as an elegant Bed & Breakfast with separate quarters for your hosts, father and son team, Doug and Chris Bishop.
A wealth of original details, such as abundant leadlight and stained glass, lofty ceilings, period light fittings, bay windows, beautiful timber floors and staircase, and a glorious corner verandah have been carefully preserved. Perfectly complementary furnishings include many antiques of the period, original artworks, crystal, silverware and regular vases of fresh flowers. The Bed & Breakfast has a club-like atmosphere without being altogether too conservative. Colour has been used on the walls of the largest rooms to add some individual zest; light yellow for the dining room, soothing green for the sitting room and almost cobalt blue for the McIntyre Suite. White trim inside and a white exterior makes it anything but sombre.
The sitting room has a delightful round bay window that jutts into the corner verandah, both pleasant places to catch the afternoon light through the trees. Along one wall of the green sitting room is a curious landscape painted directly onto the wall some years ago by an artist called Goldby. Even more curious it was painted around the original circular stained glass window. The fresco depicts New Norfolk in Tasmania.
