Property Description: Strolling distance from the charming village of Sassafras, home of the iconic Miss Marples Tea Rooms, there's a private English country garden with three endearing guest cottages. 'Clarendon' was established in the 1930s with the main home, cottages and former stables built of weatherboard. The site shares a towering pine tree lined avenue that was the original horse and carriage entrance to the neighbouring 80 acre property by the name of Burnham Beeches, with its famous art deco mansion. The gardens of Clarendon feature many century old trees and shrubs that have survived the intervening years. Over the past eight years the current owners have dedicated themselves to renewing the gardens and buildings, so it can once again be counted among the wonderful private gardens of the Dandenongs.
The pretty, white painted weatherboard cottages are hidden in different parts of the garden, out of sight of each other. The Stables is the largest of the cottages with two bedrooms, lounge, kitchen and spa bathroom, all on one level. Decorated in soft pinks and cappuccino colours it has an elegant style with a traditional floral lounge suite, striped pink and white blinds at the windows and a rattan and glass dining suite. The large elevated timber deck outside is shaded in summer by a massive walnut tree in front of the cottage.
Camellia Cottage is very different in a country style way with timber ceilings the colour of honey and timber furniture including a sleigh bed. Blue, white and yellow complete the colour scheme. The floorplan is split level with kitchen and dining on the lower level with a door to a private deck and garden associated with the cottage. The outlook from the dining area window takes in the lower garden, where a 150ft manor gum presides in all its majesty. This cottage accommodates one couple, with the bed and lounge area integrated on the upper level. Beside the bed is an open fireplace flanked by two big comfy armchairs.
Both The Stables and Camellia Cottage are free standing cottages. The two-storey Dovecote Cottage, described as a "petite suite", is attached to one end of the main house, although it has its own strictly private front door into the ground floor lounge / dining room. A large picture window dominates the room, with a pretty rose garden right outside. A quaint staircase leads to the bedroom above. This room has windows on three sides, each of them surrounded with a delicate floral border, framing another garden outlook where the magnolia and camellias put on their floral display through winter and spring.
