Warburton and the once thriving tourist town of Marysville are both approx 1 hour 45 minutes drive from Melbourne. To reach Narbethong, Taggerty and Marysville you drive through the Yarra Valley then across the Black Spur which is one of Victoria's most beautiful winding forest drives through tall mountain ash. Narbethong lies on the far side of the Black Spur in the Acheron Valley. This is where you can turn off to Marysville (now rebuilding after the February 2009 fire) and Lake Mountain, best known for cross country skiing in winter. Warburton, on the other hand, is a picturesque village on the banks of the Yarra, in the foothills of the Yarra Ranges. Mt Donna Buang is its closest winter snow playground. The Acheron Way is a road (partly unmade) that wends its way through scenic forest between Warburton and Marysville. Taggerty sits at the base of the Cathedral Mountain Range where those bound for Eildon turn off from the Maroondah Highway. ATTENTION: Marysville was devastated by fire on February 7, 2009 and very little remains of the infrastructure including the total accommodation of some 2000 beds. Narbethong was also affected, but there are still a few properties that were miraculously spared there and in nearby Taggerty. And Warburton though threatened, esacaped untouched.
