Property Description: The location of this 5-acre property at "Grandview Lookout" provides a clue to the spectacular vistas that can be admired from many spots around the grounds. A walking loop takes you to some of the best vantage points where there are benches to sit and linger over the views of the Snowy River flats far below and the nearby town of Orbost.
The historic homestead c.1891 originally built on the river flats was relocated to higher ground following the severe floods of 1893. A few of the magnificent trees, planted in the homestead garden more than a century ago, still grace the surroundings. The statuesque Bunya pine is the most notable.
Hosts, Glenn and Sue Herbert, are descendants of the district's pioneering families. They have developed the property with the addition of purpose-built Bed & Breakfast accommodation in the form of a separate building that harmonises with the colonial architecture of the homestead while incorporating the luxuries of 4½ star facilities. There a four rooms named in honour of the garden's great trees. They each have king size beds and ensuites. The 'Flame' room also features a double spa. The rooms all open onto a large timber deck, built around the Bunya Pine, and each one has a small outdoor table and chairs to enjoy the fresh air and views. Step down from the deck to a large lawn in the middle of which is the Pit Fire where guests can gather around the glowing warmth on clear, cool nights for a taste of bush country atmosphere.
The ‘Kurrajong’ room is a central guest lounge / dining room and reception. The traditional cooked breakfast is served here and there is a well stocked mini-bar and a 42" plasma television.
