Property Description: The 60-acre "Land for Wildlife" property is located at the end of a no-through road and the surrounding views of the Black Snake Ranges and Bunyip State Park are breathtaking.
The homestead was built in 1890, of bricks fired on the property, and many of the original features have been preserved, including verandahs and Victorian marble fireplaces, high ceilings and decorative plasterwork - even ornamental cherubs. The furnishing is traditional with antiques, Victorian watercolours, graceful, country style floral curtains and soft wall colours in the bedrooms. The guest lounge has rich red walls, gilt-framed oil paintings and an open fire, making an inviting winter hideaway. An entire room has been converted into a spacious bathroom exclusively for guests and while there are two bedrooms, the second is only available to extra guests, travelling in the same party.
The layout ensures maximum privacy for guests, in that all the guest rooms occupy a wing with its own entrance and verandah (pictured above). The home's central farmhouse kitchen and breakfast room provide a comfortable buffer between the guest wing and the hosts' wing. Breakfast and other in-house meals can be served by the fire, in the breakfast room with French doors and magnificent views, on the verandah or in the large farmhouse kitchen.
A traditional rose and bulb filled garden surrounds the house, with a series of maintained walking tracks winding from the garden throughout the property. A croquet lawn and a solar-heated swimming pool are integrated into the garden.
Cottage Retreat
Set well away from Tonimbuk House, the Cottage Retreat is a small dwelling in its own right with its own access. It overlooks a private valley with paths leading through the woods to the wetlands. Built of radial-sawn ash, with Victorian windows, extensive timber panelling and a wood burning stove, the cottage blends spacious comfort with rural simplicity. The split level main room steps up to the sleeping area containing a king size bed and windows on three sides. This area can be screened off from the living area with curtains. The furnishings are simple; white walls, natural wood panelling and sisal carpeting. Rocking chairs, rugs, Chinese watercolours and rich curtaining add colour and warmth.
|
Special Features:
Tonimbuk House also caters for guests with horses. The location is handy to both the horse riding tracks of Bunyip State Park and Tonimbuk Equestrian Park. A horse paddock is available for visiting horses.
Nearby Bunyip State Park consists of 16,600 hectares of parkland with multiple picnic areas and tracks offering excellent opportunities for walkers, mountain bike riders and four wheel drivers as well as horse riders.
The property's "Land for Wildlife" status recognises both the intrinsic value of the land plus subsequent efforts in planting thousands of bird attracting trees, shrubs and grasses along the paths, woods and wetland. The many contented kangaroos, wombats, birds (120 species and growing) and frogs testify to its success.

Description of Rooms/Units:
Homestead (In-House) (pictured below)
The guest wing consists of a private verandah and main entrance, with the bedrooms, bathroom and lounge on either side of a central hallway. The bedrooms each have queen size beds and Victorian architectural features. The main bedroom enjoys beautiful countryside views to the north and the east. The second bedroom has a romantic brass bed. When there is a booking for one bedroom, the second bedroom will not be used for other guests, which means the bathroom and lounge would only ever be shared by people who are travelling together.
A third bedroom has been transformed into two generous interconnected rooms; a sun-filled bathroom decorated in pale blue and white, complete with bath, and a separate dressing room.
The lounge has an open wood fire, comfortable armchairs and a cosy elegance.
Cottage Retreat (pictured right)
The Cottage has a king size bed in a raised area overlooking the living room as well as having a bush outlook through windows on three sides.
To one side of the living area is a well-equipped kitchen, to the other a study area. A television and DVD player are concealed behind cupboard doors when not in use, and there are books and music to enjoy. The cottage has another room which can be used either as a studio or as a children's bedroom.
The bathroom is old fashioned, with a shower, a huge old bath and dark wood panelling. |
